ABSTRACT

Background: Alcohol abuse is on increasing trend in world as well as in India, especially in young population. Long-term alcohol intake may leads to alcoholic chronic liver disease which may turns in to end stage liver diseases. Alcoholic chronic liver disease is associated with some hematological abnormalities which if detected at early stage may provide clear therapeutic implications in managing these patients and reducing the adverse events. Aims and Objectives: Our aim of the study was to identify various hematological abnormalities in patients of alcoholic chronic liver disease. Materials and Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study includes 100 randomly selected patients with alcoholic chronic liver disease attending Out-Patient Department and admitted in General Medicine ward of Burdwan Medical College satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed for hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell (RBC), total leukocyte count (TLC), platelet count, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), MCH concentration, and prothrombin time-international normalized ratio. The mean and standard deviation, percentages, and ratio were calculated and presented in the form of tables with the help of SPSS (IBM) ver-23. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Hematological abnormalities were found more with increased duration of alcohol consumption. Prolonged bleeding time was observed in 23% cases and prolonged clotting time was observed in 21% cases. Maximum patients belonged to Child–Pugh grade C. Hematological abnormalities were more in patients belonging to Child–Pugh grade C. Hb, RBC, platelet, and packed cell volume were significantly lower in patients belonging to Child–Pugh class C, whereas TLC, MCV, and MCH were significantly higher in class C. Conclusion: It can be concluded that related hematological changes, which are common in alcoholic chronic liver disease endanger the lives of these patients. They should be detected and corrected at earliest to minimize morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

Pregnancy is a state characterized by physiological changes. These changes are interpreted by comparison between known reference values, which themselves depend on factors such as ethnicity, environment, diet, age, sex… However, the reference values being used in clinical practice in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are derived from general populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the reference values of hematological parameters among pregnant women in Kinshasa. Methods. This analytical cross-sectional study recruited pregnant women in Kinshasa, DRC from December 2022 to April 2023. The Complete blood count was carried out for all participants using Mindary BC-5150 hematology analyzer. The mean, median, and reference values were determined using SPSS version 23. Results. A Total of 451 healthy pregnant women were enrolled in the study. The participant age range was from 18 to 49 years old, 386 (85.6 %) were married and 152 (33.75) paucipare. The defined Reference values were: RBC : 2,79-4,78 x106/µl , Hb : 10,5-12,7 g/dl, HCT :24,3-38,9 %, MCV : 84,3-99,9 fl, MCH : 25,8-29,8 pg, MCHC : 30,0-36,1 g/dl, WBC : 2,83-10,56 x103/µl , Neutrophils :0,8-7,68 x103/µl , lymphocytes : 0,72-2,83 x103/µl , Monocytes :0,10-1,06 x103/µl , Eosinophils : 0,0-0,32 x103/µl , Basophils : 0,0-0,03 x103/µl , Platelet count :189-322 x103/µl, MPV : 7,9-12,6 fl. Conclusion. Changes were observed in hematological parameters between different trimesters of the pregnancy. Considerable differences were also observed when comparing reference values in the present study to those from studies conducted in other countries.

Conclusion. ABSTRACT

The study was aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of Zizyphus oxyphyla leaves methanolic (ZOX-LME), on serum liver, kidney and hematology along with other serum parameters in Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxicated rabbits. Experimental animals were divided into five groups, six rabbits in each. These were: group NC (normal control), group, TC (toxic control) and group ST i.e. silymarine administered group at dose rate (50) mg/kg body weight (BW). Group ET1 and group ET2 treated with (ZOX-LME) at dose 200 mg/kg BW and 400 mg/kg BW. CCl4 administration caused significant (P> 0.05) impairment in serum liver enzymes, blood factors and other serum indices. Treatment with (ZOX-LME) significantly (P<0.05) reduced and normalized the levels of serum alanine transaminase (ALT) aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and hematological indices. Also significant (P< 0.05) reduction was observed in creatinine, urea, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and albumin and glucose concentrations. The altered levels of lipid profile and serum electrolytes (Ca, Mg, Cl, Na, K, and P) were significantly (P<0.05) change toward normal levels with (ZOX-LME) feeding. In addition (ZOX-LME) ingestion caused significant improvement in GSH, GST and CAT levels, while reducing the TBARS levels, exhibited antioxidant capacity. Also (ZOX-LME) showed increase inhibition against percent scavenging of 2, 2-diphenile-1-picrylehydrazyle (DPPH) free radical. Significant (P<0.05) normalizing effects were observed with high dose 400 mg/kg BW of (ZOX-LME and were equivalent to silymarine administered groups. The histological study of liver supported the hepatoprotective and renal curative activity of (ZOX-LME).

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate the impact of the therapeutic foods on the hematological parameters of malnourished children below 5 years of age. Study Design: This is a Prospective cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Intensive Nutritional Recovery Center of Tessaoua, Maradi, Niger republic, from June 15 to September 10, 2022. Methodology: We included 60 malnourished children (36 males, 24 females; age range 6-59 months) who are severely acutely malnourished. Standard survey forms that were developed for the purpose have permitted to obtain sociodemographic and hematological data (hemoglobin level and leukocyte count) concerning malnourished children. Results: The results showed that among the 60 children that were surveyed, at entry, 50 (83.33%) were recorded to have a low hemoglobin level and 36 (60%) with highly elevated leucocyte count. At the end of treatment with therapeutic foods, it was observed an overall normalization of these parameters during an average duration of hospitalization. Conclusion: Therapeutic foods have shown a significant positive influence on hematological parameters of malnourished children. Their use should therefore be encouraged in line with other strategies in order to ensure good and rapid recovery in malnourished children under five years of age.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The safety of a blood transfusion practice is anchored on safe blood from a healthy donor, while further protecting the donor from future harm. This study aimed to evaluate the hematological parameters of blood donors in view of their donor category to aid in assessing the safety threshold in terms of donation frequency. Methods: This study made use of the descriptive cross-sectional design. The blood donors were bled and their samples analyzed using a hematology autoanalyzer. Results: A total of 178 male blood donors were recruited. Most of the donors were aged 18 to 39 years and were mostly students. A greater part of them were repeat donors who had donated blood more than four times. First- and second-time donors constituted the majority of the voluntary donors. While the total red cell count was significantly lower in repeat third-time donors, the hemoglobin and hematocrit of the first-time donors were significantly higher than those of the repeat fourth-time donors. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) of the first-time donors were significantly higher than those of the repeat fifth-time donors. The red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were significantly lower in the first-time donors from those of the sixth- and seventh-time donors, respectively. Most of the fifth-time donors have subclinical anemia. There was more subclinical anemia in commercial donors than in voluntary donors. Conclusion: Repeat donors more than fifth-time donors are at risk of donation-induced iron deficiency anemia.

ABSTRACT

Background: ST-Elevation myocardial infarction is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death both in developed and developing countries. The values of hematological biomarkers were evaluated as predictors of in hospital mortality and complications, in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). This study aimed to draw a relationship between different hematological parameters and short-term clinical result in STEMI cases treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods: This prospective research involved 100 participants that had a STEMI and were receiving primary PCI and they were subjected to detailed history, general and local examination, resting surface ECG, baseline laboratory tests, reperfusion, transthoracic echocardiogram and follow up of clinical outcome. Results: After STEMI, there was not significantly different between cases with low and high NLR (P <0.4). There was significantly different between cases with low and high NLR after STEMI, low and high MPV [in heart failure, death and rehospitalization] and after STEMI, in diabetic patients and in NLR between low and high MPV groups after STEMI (P < 0.05), there was no significant statistical difference between patients with low and high PDW and after STEMI. LVEF were significant less in participants had MACE (P <0.036). In stepwise multivariate regression analysis of hematological parameters, NLR and MPV were significant predictive factors of MACE (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Hematological and coagulation parameters may be utilized as diagnostic and prognostic indicators. Early risk classification enables doctors to closely monitor and treat high-risk patients, as well as schedule them for regular follow-ups, helping to the reduction of mortality.

ABSTRACT

Paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4-4-bipiridinium dichloride (PQ) is a non-selective contact herbicide that is a major source of free radicals and generates superoxide anion, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) which causes severe oxidative damage. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a role using its biological characteristic as a suitable antioxidant in cells defense against oxygen deprivation and increasing tissue protection from oxidative stress. Vitamin E is a free-radical scavenger renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The purpose of the study was to determine the short-term therapeutic effect of a vitamin E and C combination treatment on paraquat-induced male albino rats. For the study, 200 male albino rats were used. The rats were divided into four major categories namely A, B, C, and D with 50 rats each. The "A" group received no paraquat, but the "B," "C," and "D" groups received 0.02g, 0.04g, and 0.06g of paraquat respectively every two weeks for three months. These groups were subsequently subgrouped into two with 25 rats per subgroup. The "A" group was divided into two "A0" and "AVE"; 揃 was subgrouped into 揃0 and BVEC 揅 was subgrouped into 揅0 and 揅VEC and 揇 was subgrouped into 揇0 and 揇VEC. A0, B0, C0 and D0 were subgroups without Vit E and C combined treatment while AVEC, BVEC, CVEC and DVEC were subgroups with combined treatment with 500mg of vitamin E and 2000mg/l of C medicated water every week for two months. Blood was drawn for the analysis of hematogical parameters (Hemoglobin concentration [Hb], Packed Cell volume [PCV], Total White blood cell count [T-WBC], Neutrophils and Lymphocytes). There was a significant variation in the hematological parameters among the "A0", "B0", "C0", and "D0" at p-value<0.05. There was also significant variation in the hematological parameters between the "AVEC", "BVEC", "CVEC", and "DVEC", p-value < 0.05. Consequently, it was also observed that there were significant variations in intra-group comparisons of Hb and PCV, p-value<0.05, whereas other markers were not statistically different. This study found that combining vitamin E and C has a therapeutic effect on 慴lood anemia indicators but not the immunity of male albino rats after one month of weekly treatment. As a result, a weekly treatment with Vit E and C combination therapy can alleviate PQ toxicity by ameliorating anemia but not affecting the immune system of male albino rats.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a pregnancy complication that can progress with persistent nausea and vomiting. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the relationship between hematological parameters and HG. Method A total of 532 pregnant women with HG who were admitted to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology between March 2019 and February 2021, and 534 healthy pregnant women with characteristics similar to those of the case group were included in the study. The hematological parameters of both groups were compared. In addition, the hematological parametersof patients with HG according to the severity of ketonuria were compared. Results Themean age of the HG group (n=532) was 26.3 ± 4.1 years, and that of the control group (n=534) was 25.9 ± 4.8 years. Among patients with HG, 46% (n=249) had ketone(+), 33% (n=174), ketone(++), and 21% (n=109), ketone(+++). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were higher in the HG group than in the control group: 3.8 (2.8-5.8)/3.2 (2.6-4.0); p<0.001; and 135.2 ± 30.4/108.9 ± 62.2; p<0.001 respectively. The neutrophil count, NLR, and PLR were higher in the group with ketone(+++) than in the groups with ketone(+) or ketone(++): 7.6 ± 1.9/5.5 ± 2.4; p<0.001; 3.8(2.8-4.6)/2.9(2.3- 3.6); p<0.001; and 149.9 ± 48.0/135.9 ± 65.7; p<0.001 respectively. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) level, the NLR, and the PLR were identified as independent predictors of the presence of HG and the level of ketone positivity in HG patients. Conclusion The NLR and PLR were high in patients with HG, suggesting the its inflammatory activity. They may be important markers associated with the presence and severity of HG.

ABSTRACT

Paraquat is a controversial herbicide that can increase reactive oxygen species levels by undergoing redox cycling and producing reactive oxygen species such superoxide anion. Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that modulates oxidation processes in the body due to its particular antioxidant activity. It is a powerful chain-breaking antioxidant that limits the synthesis of reactive oxygen species molecules. The goal of the study was to see if vitamin E had a short-term therapeutic impact on paraquat-induced male albino rats. For the experiment, 200 male albino rats were employed. The 200 rats were separated into four primary groups (A, B, C, and D), each of which included 50 rats and was then subdivided into two subgroups, each with 25 rats. The "A" group was not induced paraquat, but the "B," "C," and "D" groups were induced 0.02g, 0.04g, and 0.06g of paraquat, respectively. The "A" group was divided into two subgroups: "A0" and "AVE," which represented the subgroups that were not given Vit E and those who were given Vit E (500 mg) respectively. This design was similar for groups "B," "C," and "D." The frequency of paraquat introduction was fortnightly for three months, then followed by vitamin E treatment weekly for two month. After the treatment with Vit E, the rats were sacrificed and blood was taken to analyze several hematological parameters (Hemoglobin concentration [Hb], Packed Cell volume [PCV], Total White blood cell count [T-WBC], Neutrophils and Lymphocytes). These hematological parameters differed significantly across the "Ao," "Bo," "Co," and "Do" groups, at p-value < 0.05. This was equally true for the "Ave," "Bve," "Cve," and "Dve," groups at p-value < 0.05. The findings also revealed that intra-group comparisons of Hb, PCV levels between B0 vs Bve, C0 vs Cve, and D0 vs Dve were significant different, p-value<0.05 whereas WBC, neutrophils and lymphocytes were not p-value>0.05. This study has shown that PQ insult on anaemia indicators in rats can be corrected by a weekly administration of the vitamin.

Aim:To determine hematological profile of eligible blood donors at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Kenya.Study Design:Adopted a cross-sectional study.Place and Duration of Study:Kenyatta National Hospital, between March 2021 and August 2021.Methodology:This study recruited 202 eligible blood donors comprising of 173 males and 29 females aged 18-57 years. Blood samples (4ml) were drawn from donated units into ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) tube. Hematological parameters were estimated using a complete blood count (CBC) analyzer (Humacount 5D®). A total of eighteen hematological parameters were analyzed. These parametersincluded; red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin concentration, RBC indices, white blood cell (WBC) count, absolute and differential WBC and platelet (PLT) count. Results were presented in medians and 95% interquartile ranges and compared using Mann–Whitney U test. Results:The median counts for all hematological parameters were within the accepted reference ranges for the adult urban population in Kenya. The median and interquartile range for total red cell count was 4.9×106/μL [0.74], hemoglobin level was 14.3g/dL[1.8], hematocrit was 44.9% [5.1], white blood count was 4.9×103/μL [1.4] and platelet was 234×103/L [64]. Among the red cell parameters analyzed, male donors had a significantly higher RBC count (P<0.001), hematocrit (P=0.001) and hemoglobin (P<0.001) than female donors. Among white blood cell parameters analyzed, only lymphocytes (P=0.011) were significantly higher in female donors than male donors. Platelet count (P<0.001) was also significantly higher in females than male donors. Conclusion:This study showed eligible donors at KNH had significant differences in red cell count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, lymphocytes and platelets between male and female donors. Additionally, it highlighted that some blood donors had hematological parameters belowand above the recommended reference ranges. These findings support the need to review the current donor recruitment criteria recommending the inclusion of complete blood count in screening.

ABSTRACT

Epilepsy is a chronic neurologic disease that comes third after cerebrovascular and Alzheimer's disease. Anti-epileptic drugs may affect certain hematological parameters of epileptic patients. Few researches investigated hematological adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs in Libya. Thus, the aim was to evaluate hematological parameters in epileptic children who are on antiepileptic drugs. This retrospective study included 83 pediatric patients with epilepsy recruited from Benghazi Children Hospital, Department of Neurology, from December 2017 to April 2018. Data collected included demographic characteristics, types of epilepsy, anti-epileptic drugs and serum hematological parameters. Hematological parameters recorded included: hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, mean cell volume, mean cell hemoglobin, mean cell hemoglobin concentration and white blood cell count. In all treated patients, regardless of the number of antiepileptic drugs therapy used, the average levels of hematological parameters were significantly lower in treated group compared to control group (11.64 gm per dl, 34.53%, 27.74 pg and 33.13 gm per dl, respectively). A significant increase (12.12109 per l) in white blood cell counts in treated group was found. Average hemoglobin, hematocrit and mean cell hemoglobin concentration levels were significantly lower in patients on poly-therapy compared to mono-therapy and control groups. Average white blood cell counts were significantly increased in patients on anti-epileptic drugs. In sodium valproate users, levels of hematological parameters were significantly decreased but significantly increased in white blood cell counts. In diazepam users, significant increases in white blood cells and platelet but no difference in other parameters observed. There were no differences in all hematological parameters among patients using carbamazepine except for platelet counts (significantly decreased). In conclusion, there is substantial effect of the anti-epileptic drugs, especially sodium valproate, on hematological parameters of children despite the effects were not critical as the changes were still in the normal range.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To understand the effect of long-term high-frequency platelet donation on the health, safety and platelet quality of blood donors. 【Methods】 From August 2020 to July 2022, blood donors who donated platelets for single collection in the station were selected as two groups: those who donated for 20-29 times and those who donated for 30-44 times. Such 14 test indexes as red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), platelet count (Plt), white blood cell count (WBC), large platelet ratio (P-LCR), lymphocyte (LYM) , neutrophil (NE), mean hemoglobin content (MCH), mean hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelet specific volume (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were grouped and statistically analyzed for 5 times in each group. In addition, blood donors who have donated platelets more than 100 times in the station were chosen; the changes of their 5 parameters as RBC, Hb, Hct, PLT and WBC, as well as the correlation with the total number of platelet donations were analyzed through statistical analysis of the first 100 donations(10 donations/group). 【Results】 During 2 years, the hematological parameters were similar between 20-29 donation group(n=30) and 30-44 donation group(n=11) (P>0.05). For donors with donations≥100 occasions, RBC, Hb, Hct and WBC were negatively correlated with the number of blood donations, while Plt was positively correlated. There were significant differences in Hb, Hct, WBC and Plt among groups (P<0.05). Hb, Hct and WBC showed a downward trend, while Plt showed an upward trend. 【Conclusion】 With the increase of blood donations and units of blood donated, some changes in hematological parameters are observed among long-term high-frequency platelet donors. Monitoring and health education should be strengthened to ensure the safety and quality of blood donors.

ABSTRACT

Reducing the mortality rate is of a great economic importance for pig farming. Therefore, it is necessary to define the conditions in the farrowing unit based on the performance of the piglets, and specific hematological and biochemical parameters. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine the importance of using skin moisture absorbent and its influence in preventing hypothermia, which causes great economic losses in pig production. The experiment was set up on a commercial farm in Serbia and included 92 pigs divided into the experimental and control group. Body temperature values, body weight and blood parameters were monitored. The obtained values indicate that there is a significantly positive correlation of body temperature change and body weight values, and body temperature showed a significantly higher increase in the experimental group compared to the control group. The results obtained from hematological and biochemical parameters provide a clearer picture of the metabolic processes in piglets in the farrowing unit and can be used to further improve pig production and as a complement to genetic enhancement.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to validate reference intervals (RIs) for hematology and blood biochemistry of dogs domiciled in the Eastern Amazon and to establish new RIs for parameters not yet validated. Samples from 44 clinically healthy adult dogs of different breeds and sexes were used. The methodology proposed by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) was used for validation, and the statistical methodology proposed by the American Society for Clinical Veterinary Pathology (ASCPV) was used to determine the RIs of the non-validated parameters. The IRs were determined using the Excel program with the Reference Value Advisor add-in (version 2.1). The software performs calculations according to CLSI recommendations as suggested by the ASCVP guidelines. A total of 25 parameters (13 hematological and 12 biochemical) were submitted to the validation process. Of this total, six (24%) parameters were not validated (Hemoglobin, CHGM, eosinophils, lymphocytes, albumin and GGT) and new intervals were established for these. For most hematological and biochemical parameters (76%), the RIs previously established in the literature are still valid for use in dogs raised in the Eastern Amazon. For non-validated parameters, just for eosinophils and lymphocytes, we recommend that other studies, with a larger number of animals, be carried out to confirm our results or establish new IRs. The established IRs for hemoglobin, CHGM, albumin and GGT can be used in place of the old ranges.

ABSTRACT

Background: Malaria is a disease with a great global burden. It is one of the most prevalent parasitic infection common intropical, subtropical countries, particularly Asia and Africa. Malaria causing plasmodia is parasites of blood and hence induceshematological alterations. The hematological changes that have been reported to accompany malaria include anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis as well as leukopenia, mild-to-moderate atypical lymphocytosis, monocytosis, eosinophilia, and neutrophilia. Hence, the present study is undertaken to evaluate the various hematological parameters affected in malariaand to observe the variations, if any, in Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and mixed infections.Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out in the Department of Pathology at Tertiary Health Care Centerof South Gujarat from August 2018 to October 2018. A total of 480 smear-positive malaria cases were analyzed and varioushematological parameters were studied. Results: Out of 480 smear-positive cases, P. vivax was positive in 77% of cases, P. falciparum was positive in 22% of casesand mixed infection in 1% of cases. Most of the cases were seen in the age group of 21–40 years. Anemia was seen in 53.1%of cases. Normocytic normochromic blood picture was the most common type in anemic patients (46.6%). Thrombocytopeniawas seen in 84.58% of the patients. Out of which, 75.86% were affected by P. vivax, 23.15% were affected by P. falciparum, and 0.98% were affected by the mixed infection. About 28.75% of cases showed hematological features of leukopenia, and5.2% of cases were having leukocytosis. Conclusions: Various hematological findings can help in early diagnosis of malaria which is essential for timely and appropriatetreatment which can limit the morbidity and prevent further complications

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE Coronary collateral development (CCD) predicts the severity of coronary heart disease. Hemogram parameters, such as mean platelet volume (MPV), eosinophil, red cell distribution width, and platelet distribution width (PDW), are supposed novel inflammatory markers. We aimed to compare hemogram parameter values in patients presenting with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) with adequate or inadequate CCD. METHODS A total of 177 patients with NSTEMI undergoing coronary arteriography were enrolled and divided into two groups based on the development of CCD: one group with adequate CCD (n=88) and the other with impaired CCD (n=89). RESULTS Baseline demographics and clinical risk factors were similar between the groups. Hemogram parameters were not significantly different between the two groups. However, compared to the inadequate CCD group, the median PDW was significantly higher in the adequate CCD group, 17.6 (1.4) vs. 17.8 (1.6) p=0.004. In a multivariate analysis, PDW (p=0.001, 95% CI for OR: 0.489(0,319-0,750) was found to be significantly different in the adequate CCD group compared to the inadequate CCD group. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that PDW was significantly correlated with the Rentrop score (r=0.26, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We suggest that since PDW is an index that is inexpensive and easy to assess, it could serve as a marker of CCD in patients with NSTEMI.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Destruction of blood cells and damage to hepatocytes arethehallmark of hepatitis B viral infection. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to evaluate some hematological parameters and biomarkers of liver injury in healthy blood donors infected with the occult and overt hepatitis B attending the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi, Nigeria Materials and Methods: A total of 20 overt and 14 occult hepatitis B virus-infected blood donors were confirmed and enrolled using Roche ® COBAS q-PCR from 212 consented pooled subjects. Hematological parameters and absolute CD4+T-cell count were determined using the Sysmex hematology analyzer and Partec cyflow counter, respectively. Determination of serum Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Alpha Feto-protein (AFP) levels were done spectrophotometrically and ELISA, respectively. Results: The mean red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, white blood cells, CD4 and platelet count in the overt group were not statistically significantly different from the occult group p>0.05. However, of the 34 infected subjects, 7 (20.6%), 6 (17.7%), 2 (5.9%), 13 (38.2%), 2 (5.9%) and 4 (11.8%) had abnormally low blood values for red blood cells, white blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, CD4 and platelets respectively. The mean ALT and ALP values from the occult and overt groups were not also significantly different (p>0.05).Conclusion: This study found a decrease in the values of some blood cells. However, no significant changes in the liver enzymes were found. These infected individuals should be managed to prevent transmission of HBV infection to other people and subsequent destruction of blood cells and damage to liver cells. Future studies couldfocuson patients with chronic liver diseases/Hepatocellular carcinoma caused by HBV to determine the effects on the liver biomarkers and hematological parameters

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Petrol is the non-specific term for petroleum which is used for inside combustion of engines. Petrol filling workers are highly vulnerable to occupational exposure to these harmful substances which lead to hemato-toxicity and blood disorders such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and dysplastic bone marrow. Thus, this study was aimed to assess hematological parameters of petrol filling workers in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia.@*METHODS@#A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2019 in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia. A total of 110 study participants comprising 55 study groups and 55 controls group were recruited by a convenient sampling technique. Socio-demographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and 3 ml of venous blood was collected for the determination of hematological parameters. The data were entered into Epi info 7.2.0.1 and analyzed by SPSS version of 20. Mean, standard deviation, median, and interquartile ranges were used to present the data. Independent t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the mean or median difference between parametric and non-parametric hematological parameters, respectively. Moreover, Pearson product-moment and Spearman's rank-order bivariable correlations analyses were used to describe the correlation between hematological parameters and duration of exposure to petrol. A P value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant.@*RESULTS@#The study revealed that mean red blood cell count and hemoglobin level as well as the median hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, platelet count, absolute lymphocytes count, and red cell distribution width values of petrol filling workers showed a significant increment compared with the control group. On the other hand, the mean cell hemoglobin value of petrol filling workers showed a significant decrement compared with healthy controls. Moreover, the duration of exposure to petrol showed a significant positive correlation with red blood cell count and mean cell hemoglobin concentration; however, a significant negative correlation was observed with mean cell volume.@*CONCLUSION@#This study showed that the majority of hematological parameters of petrol filling workers showed an increment compared with healthy controls which might be associated with exposure to petrol chemicals. However, further longitudinal study with a larger sample size should be conducted to explore the impact of petrol exposure on hematopoiesis.
